MERE WANG
Jewellery Designer & Silversmith
王茉谦的首饰世界
ABOUT I 关于
Mere Wang is a practicing jewellery artist working in Melbourne who was raised in China and Australia. Mere’s practice is founded in material experimentation with an influence of traditional Chinese craft practice, including enamelling and wood carving. Through an emphasis on innovative silversmithing and enamelling techniques, Mere explores the story-telling and sentimental value of studio art jewellery.
In 2017, Mere completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with Distinction (Gold and Silversmithing) from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University. Since then, she has worked as a jewellery designer, bench jeweller, and independent jewellery artist in both Australia and China. Mere has won the Koodak Enamelling Prize for Technical Excellence in 2017, and participated in Marzee for Starters Project held by Galerie Marzee in 2018 and 2019. Mere is currently completing a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.

Tension is the key element in Mere’s work. Through an innovative application of ebony, enamel, metal embroidery and fabrication, her jewellery awakes a sense of fragility and complexity. The juxtaposition of boldness and delicacy run throughs Mere’s work, contradicts and reinforces the subject: breaking and fixing. Her work is not only about aesthetic presentation, but more of a visceral expression. The contradiction, the entanglement, the emotion is expressed through the choice of colour, making process, and materials.
